ICLEI Europe was pleased to welcome Alba Iulia (Romania) as the newest member of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. Alba Iulia is an ancient city with 66,000 inhabitants located in the mountainous, central Alba region of Romania. It has a good track record of sustainability, with an award-winning public bus service and a recently opened public bike network allowing residents to leave their cars at home and get around the city with ease. Within Romania, it is leading the way in ensuring its public transport system connects within the city and across the region in compliance with European regulation.

Ruud Schuthof, Director of Communications and Member Relations at ICLEI Europe, travelled to Romania last week to personally welcome the city to ICLEI. He met Mayor Mircea Hava and City Manager Nicolaie Moldovan in a ceremony at the City Hall on Monday evening. The following day, all three addressed the Forum for Sustainable Mobility and Metropolitan Development, being held in the city.
