ARAD is the capital city of the Arad County straddling the Mures River and occupying parts of two historical provinces of the Western Romania, Crisana and Banat.
The city has a population of 147,992 (according to 2011 census), making it the 13th largest city in Romania and the third largest city in the western part of the country, after Timisoara and Oradea.
Arad is the most important trans-European road and rail transportation junction point in western Romania, included in the 4th Pan-European Corridor linking Western Europe to South-Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries. The city has an extensive light rail network and a few bus lines. Arad Airport, with a cargo terminal, is situated 4 km from downtown Arad.

Education
- Arad has two universities, a state and a private one and about two dozen high schools, some of the more famous being the "Moise Nicoară" College, the Pedagogical High School "Dimitrie Tichindeal", "Elena Ghiba-Birta" College, the Economics College, the Technical College for Constructions and Environmental Protection Arad. and the Vasile Goldiș theoretical high school.
- High schools in minority languages include the Hungarian "Csiky Gergely" school group and the German Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn theoretical high school.
- Artistic education from first grade to highschool graduation is offered by the various sections of the “Sabin Drăgoi” Art School (music, plastic arts, architecture and design, theatre).
Culture
The State Philharmonic Orchestra and Quire of Arad perform all over the world.
The Concert Hall of the Cultural Palace is known for having the best acoustic in this part of Europe.
Arad Classical Theatre “Ioan Slavici”, including the Puppets Theatre, organising The National Classical Theatre Festival, The International Festival “Euromarionete”, the International Underground Theater Festival.
The four main art galleries organise the International Biennial of Painting, Sculpture and Graphics “Meeting Point”, The International Biennial Drawing Saloon , The Biennial Small Sculpture Saloon.
The Arad Museum founded in 1893 has such sections as Museum of Archeology and History, Natural Sciences, Arts.
The Counry Library „A.D: Xenopol” (founded in 1913) owns 500,000 publications, among which 22,000 rare books
Monuments
Arad is a city of impressive buildings and architecture, with many of the most important sights located along the broad tree-lined main boulevard.
The city has a rich cultural and historical patrimony. It offers to the visitors a real out-door museum of architectural styles specific to the XVIII, XIX and XX centuries
The architecture lovers can admire buildings erected in baroque, renaissance, eclectic, classic, neo-gothic and secession style These include the impressive white City Hall Palace (1875), the Palace of Culture (1911-1916), the neo-gothic and secessionist-style Red Church (1906), the large, domed Roman Catholic Church (1902-1904), the neo-classical State Theatre (1874) and the new Orthodox Cathedral “Holy Trinity”
The Fortress of Arad is a fortification system built in the city of Arad, on the left bank of the Mureş River at the direct order of the Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa, in the 18th century. The fortress lies today in the Subcetate district of the city, on the former military border between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire
The fortress has been used during its existence as a military garrison, a military prison and since 1999 has been the headquarters of the Mixed Romanian-Hungarian Battalion.
The city plans to give the fortress
a touristic destination after rcomplex
restoration works.
Arad is a candidate city for the title of Cutural Capital in 2021
